Autism Acceptance Month Partner Toolkit

In honor of April being Autism Acceptance Month the CDC has created a partner toolkit to promote and raise awareness on autism acceptance. You can partner by using your voice to spread messages on social media of awareness, inclusion, and connecting people to support services and one another. Fact Sheets on the Autism Spectrum Disorder are used here to look at the early signs of autism in children or toddlers, in addition to early identification and prevention of ASD from children ages 4 to 8 years old.

Past, Present, and Future Impact of SEED

Past, Present, and Future Impact of SEED, as a part of April’s Autism Acceptance Month the CDC is highlighting the work done through Study to Explore Early Development (SEED), and what they have learned about the autism spectrum disorder so far. Additionally, they give an opportunity to share SEED’s mission to help raise awareness of the CDC’s findings.

‘Autistic while black’: How autism amplifies stereotypes

The following article by Catinan Burkett discusses what the stereotypes attached to Black individuals are and how it will make it particularly dangerous to be Autistic while Black. Additionally, how they will react to those stereotypes as an autistic person, making it impossible to change the behavior because of the ASD disorder. Topics such as “Bound By Bias” within and outside the Black community stresses the importance to erase standards for black people set by stereotypes in order for those on the spectrum to function in their unique way. Additionally, discussing the importance of  race in evaluating how therapies work since there is little research on how race can influence autism.


Organizations

Nia Foundation

Building the capacity of our member organizations and fill the information gap available in the disability area by organizing, experience sharing workshops, facilitating exchange of relevant information among different actors on disability, organizing capacity building training workshops, coordinating and providing of small grants for member organizations to implement activities on different sectors that promote inclusion of persons with disabilities.


Nehemiah Autism Center

The Nehemiah Autism Center is a governmental office and has rented a house to receive autistic children located in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Nehemiah Center’s mission is to provide care, instruction and support for children with autism and related disabilities. They do this by promoting cognitive, emotional and relational growth through individualized programs while providing counseling and support to parents. Additionally, teaching the parents to become active participants in their child’s education and development; and finally, to raise public awareness of the nature and prevalence of Autistic Spectrum Disorders.



Autism Society of America

An organization that provides advocacy, education, information and referral, support, and community at national, state and local levels.


Kenya Autism Alliance

Established in 2011, the Kenya Autism Alliance is a long advocate for the cause of Autism throughout the African Continent. They hope to achieve this goal by creating awareness about Autism and providing information and resources to individuals, parents, and carers in the hopes of enhancing the quality of life for people on the spectrum.
